Raj Sargam

Raj Sargam (Raj Kumar Lamichhane) is a Nepali author, journalist, and independent filmmaker whose work explores social justice, human rights, caste discrimination, dignity, and the lived experiences of marginalized communities.

His award-winning short film Colour of Tea has been screened and recognized at numerous international film festivals. It received top honors at the Ierapetra International Documentary Festival (Greece) and the Gyeonggi Film Festival (South Korea). The film also earned the Jury Special Mention Award at the 5th Lisboeta International Short Film Festival in Nicosia, Cyprus, and was selected as a finalist at the Aceh Film Festival (Indonesia), further establishing its international acclaim.

Through his filmmaking, Raj Sargam brings overlooked stories to global audiences, using cinema to examine caste discrimination, social inequality, human rights, dignity, and the resilience of marginalized communities.

In addition to filmmaking, Raj Sargam is an acclaimed novelist writing in Nepali. His novels Chimni and Chhaugharexplore pressing social issues and the realities faced by marginalized communities. Chhaughar, inspired by the traditional practice of Chhaupadi (menstrual isolation) in Nepal's Far Western region, was nominated for Nepal's prestigious Madan Puraskar and Padmashree Literary Award. His latest novel is scheduled for publication in 2026 by FinePrint, one of Nepal's leading publishing houses.

With more than two decades of experience in mainstream journalism, Raj Sargam has reported extensively on arts, literature, culture, and issues affecting women, Dalit communities, Indigenous peoples, and other marginalized groups. Throughout his career, he has combined journalism, literature, and filmmaking to amplify voices that are too often overlooked, fostering greater awareness of inequality, dignity, and human rights through both storytelling and reportage.
